Allan Kardec, pen name of Hippolyte Leon Denizard Rivail, French educator who is credited with being the 'systematizer' of spiritism. Spiritism is the belief of the existence of a spirit after death. Members of the International Spiritist Union is a religious group based on the works of Allan Kardec and others. Kardec wrote 5 books, known by spiritists as the Spiritist Codification. The books are questions that were written by Kardec. The answers were dictated by spirits.

The Fox Sisters, whom many credit as the founders of Spiritualism. Kate & Margaret were mediums; Leah helped manage her younger sisters as their fame grew.
